History of the Institute

              King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, is an institute following the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Thonburi, and King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology North Bangkok Act of 1985. As a legal entity, it is classified as a university affairs office, with the goals of studying, analyzing, enriching, and providing services in technology, science, and technical education, including maintaining the art and culture of the country. In the 8th of March, 2008, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang changed its status to an autonomous university, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 125, Part 45, Series A, published on 7 March, 2008, pages 95 – 124.

             King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang consists of King Mongkut, in which His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej granted a royal permission to use his royal symbol, “Phra Maha Mongkut” as the institute’s emblem. It is considered sacred, and extremely auspicious. Its Thai name also contains the phrase “Chao Kun Thahan”, which is held as a memorial to Chaophraya Surawong Waiyawat, commonly known as “Chao Kun Thahan”, as Ms. Liam Protpittayapayat, his heir, stated her intentions in donating the land on which the institute is currently located, with 1,345.6 square kilometers used from a total of 1,665.6 square kilometers donated (the remaining 320 square kilometers was donated to Protpittayapayat School).

King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, or commonly called “Phra Chom Klao Ladkrabang”, has had the following history:

  • 24 August 1960 – Signed a technical cooperation agreement with the Japanese government in building the Telecommunications Training Center, Nonthaburi under the Ministry of Education.
  • May 1964 - The Telecommunications Training Center, Nonthaburi was changed into a college, renaming itself to Nonthaburi Telecommunications College.
  • 24 April 1971 – The North Bangkok Technical College, Nonthaburi Telecommunications College, and Thonburi Technical College joined forces to establish “King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology”.
  • 24 August 1972 – Nonthaburi Telecommunications College changed its name to Faculty of Engineering, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Nonthaburi Center.
  • 15 November 1972 – The Bang Phlad College of Technology joined King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Nonthaburi Center and changed its name to the Faculty of Architecture.
  • 29 June 1974 – King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology changed from an institute under the Ministry of Education to be under the State University Bureau and changed the word “center” to “campus” – the Nonthaburi Center was renamed to the Nonthaburi Ladkrabang Campus.
  • 10 November 1977 – Established the Faculty of Industrial Education and Science.
  • 22 April 1979 – The Chao Kun Thahan College of Agriculture was transferred from the Ministry of Education to join King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Nonthaburi Ladkrabang Campus, and it was renamed to the Chao Kun Thahan Ladkrabang Campus.
  • 9 May 1981 – The Chao Kun Thahan College of Agriculture was renamed to the Faculty of Agriculture, and the Computer Research and Services Office was established.
  • 20 February 1986 – King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Nonthaburi Ladkrabang Campus was renamed to King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang.
  • 22 May 1986 – A graduate school was established.
  • 9 December 1988 – Established the Faculty of Science, split off from the Faculty of Industrial Education.
  • 29 May 1991 – Established the Central Library.
  • 20 June 1996 – Established the Chumphon Campus.
  • 27 February 1996 – Established the Faculty of Information Technology.
  • 29 August 1996 – Established the Office of the Registrar.
  • 8 March 2008 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang changed its status to an autonomous university, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 125, Part 45, Series A, published on 7 March, 2008.
  • 15 July 2008 – King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang established and determined the responsibilities of each department in the institute, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 125, Special Part 117, Series D, published on 14 July, 2008 - the established departments include the Office of Institute Council, the Office of the President, Academic Section consisting of the Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Industrial Education, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Information Technology, Faculty of Agro-Industry, Chumphon Campus, International College, College of Nanotechnology, and the College of Data Technology and Applications.  Other sections include the Central Library Office, the Academic Administration Office, the Computer Service Office, the Registration and Processing Office, and the Office of Academic Promotion and Services Ladkrabang.
  • 1 April 2010 – King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang established the College of Administration and Management, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 127, Special Part 16, Series D, Page 69, published on 1 February, 2010.
  • 20 July 2010 – King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renames the College of Data Capture Technology and Applications to the College of Information Management Innovation, as announced in the Royal Gazette, Book 127, Special Part 123, Series D, Page 36, published on 30 August, 2010.
  • 27 June 2013 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renamed the Chumphon Campus to the Chumphon Khet Udomsak Campus, Chumphon Province, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 130, Special Part 96, Series D, Page 37, published on 7 August, 2013.
  • 3 December 2014 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang established the Office of General Education, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 131, Special Part 262, Series D, Page 12, published on 23 December, 2014.
  • 22 December 2015 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renamed the College of Administration and Management to the Faculty of Administration and Management, and the Office of Academic Promotion and Services Ladkrabang to the KMITL Research and Innovation Services, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 133, Special Part 11, Series D, Page 17, published on 14 January 2016.
  • 10 March 2016 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renamed the College of Data Management Innovation to the College of Advanced Manufacturing Innovation, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 133, Special Part 81, Series D, Page 18, published on 7 April, 2016.
  • 4 May 2016 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang established the International Medical College, the International Academy of Aviation Industry, and the College of Educational Innovation Research, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 133, Special Part 135, Series D, Page 20, published on 14 June 2016.
  • 5 July 2016 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang established the Faculty of Liberal Arts, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 133, Special Part 177, Series D, Page 41, published on 11 August, 2016.
  • 6 February 2017 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renamed the Faculty of Industrial Education to the School of Industrial Education and Technology, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 134, Special Part 77, Series D, Page 16, published on 13 March 2017.
  • 18 July 2017 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renamed the International Medical College to the Faculty of Medicine, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 134, Special Part 216, Series D, Page 39, published on 1 September, 2560.
  • 3 January 2018 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang established the Institute of Music Science and Engineering (IMSE), as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 135, Special Part 31, Series D, Page 69, published on 9 February, 2018.
  • 8 October 2018 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang established the Smart City innovative Research Academy (SCiRA), as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 135, Special Part 280, Series D, Page 16, published on 6 October, 2018.
  • 2 July 2019 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang disbanded the International College, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 136, Special Part 190, Series D, Page 50, published on 30 July, 2019.
  • 16 January 2020 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renamed the Faculty of Agro-Industry to the School of Food Industry, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 137, Special Part 45, Series D, Page 9, published on 26 February, 2020.
  • 24 February 2020 - King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang renamed the Faculty of Administration and Management to KMITL Business School, as announced in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, Book 137, Special Part 115, Series D, Page 39, published on 16 May, 2020.

Currently, KMITL teaches at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. There are both general courses and supplementary courses, and the institute has over 20,000 students in all major and educational levels.
