Curriculum

A student admitted to and enrolled in the Logistics and Supply Chain Management Master's Degree Pogramme may select one study plan (totaling 37 hour-credits) from among the following two different plans:

  • Plan A - Theses and Coursework Option: In this degree program the student will complete two consecutive theses that are equivalent to 12 hour--credits.
  • Plan B - Coursework-only Option: This degree program will consist mainly of course work, supplemented by evidence of advanced work in the form of two consecutive research studies that are equivalent to a minimum of 6 credits in an area of interest as determined by the supervisory programme committee.

purchasing raw materials, and clearing demand in production to delivery. Topics highlighted include inventory management,
lay-outing of facilities, transport management, information technology and global supply chain, as well as related case studies.

13027102 QUANTITATIVE METHODS FOR LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN
MANAGEMENT ANALYSIS

Quantitative techniques for management decision-making with applications by business. Various quantitative analytical tools
used to effectively optimize operational flows in organizations as well as simulating a real-life situation.

13027103 INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
Prerequisite: None
Fundamentals of inventory management, including continual replenishment, ordering policies, measuring global supply chain
inventory, inventory position within the chain, and risk pooling. Focus on strategies to reduce inventory factors that lead to
an increase in cycle inventory, the role of safety inventory to encounter supply or demand uncertainty, and factors that influence
the level of safety stock. Topics highlighted include material requirement planning (MRP), just-in-time (JIT) operation, lean supply
chains, and inventory evaluation.

13027104 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Managerial and organizational gains from information technology (IT). Contemporary IT topics include e-commerce, internet,
intranet, extranet, groupware, data mining, multimedia systems, electronic data interchange (EDI), decision support systems (DSS),
and their applications to enterprise systems. Highlighted are applications of IT to improve competitiveness, business process
re-engineering, knowledge management, IT outsourcing, and appraising performance frameworks for strategic information systems planning.

Current issues in logistics and supply chain management that are briefly addressed by other courses. Emphasis on Logistics
and Supply Chain Management as well as related topics through student presentations of related issues with solutions, analysis,

13027106 TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT
Prerequisite: 13027101
Characteristics of various modes of domestic and international transport, factors bearing on transport demand, costs, market structures,
carrier pricing, carrier operation, and service characteristics, as well as their effect on other supply chain costs and supply chain
performance such as routes, labour, and competition. Also addressed are the organizational logistics function and the interfacing
of distribution channels.

13027204 LAWS ON LOGISTICS MANAGEMENT

Basic skills required to move materials in support of the logistics function domestically and internationally, focused on any international
business transaction involving the sale and supply of goods with a view to the means by which the goods are transported from
the exporter's country to the importer's country. Emphasis on the legal relationship between the parties to a contract of carriage
and legal matters that arise in commercial transactions between businesses. Certain legal solutions characteristically adopted by
legal systems with emphasis on international, British or US American systems. Appropriate legal rules and evidence of other
jurisdictions by way of illustration.

13027205 WAREHOUSE AND DISTRIBUTION MANAGEMENT

Fundamental operations in warehouse management, including mathematical models for the design, planning, and operation of
warehouse and distribution systems; state-of-the-art warehouse operations; information technology applications for warehouse operations;
warehouse technology such as bar-coding system, and radio frequency identification (RFID) for inventory control systems.
Also covered are warehousing and distribution management, warehouse location and lay-out, health and safety issues, product
classification, material handling equipments and systems, aisle width decision, and racking and shelving.

13027206 BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT

Methods and practices to create and improve business processes. Overview and discussion of principles, concepts, and techniques
required to transform a business, as well as current trends. Spectrum of analytical tools from a traditional, functional approach to a
process-centric one. Comparison of the various methods for architecture, analysis, design and specification used in the business process
management field.

13027207 PROCUREMENT MANAGEMENT

Overview of procurement and purchasing activities in a supply chain. Topics highlighted include supplier evaluation and selection,
pricing, negotiation, contracting, inventory management, quality control, buying decisions and plans, cost analysis, purchase agreements,
and purchasing analysis of capital equipment, services, institutional and government purchases. Global sourcing, total cost of ownership,
negotiation, contract management, purchasing laws and ethics, e-procurement and e-bidding process are also emphasized.

13027208 PRODUCTION AND OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT

The strategic role of operations management in business processes, with emphasis on tools and techniques used for strategy execution
for the delivery of products and services. Topics covered include operations strategy; process design and analysis; capacity, bottleneck,
and queue management; quality management; and six-sigma. These tools and techniques are highlighted with regard to
supply chain management, forecasting, just-in-time (JIT) operations, lean production and operations, sales and operations planning,
and inventory management.

13027209 ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING AND APPLICATION

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) as a core requirement for success in today's marketplace. Focus on a single ERP application
for consistency, supplemented by briefs on various other ERP software. Student assignments to exemplify real-world applications
of ERP in business, followed by discussion.

13027210 GLOBAL COLLRABORATIVE SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Globalization impact on businesses in terms of having to manage global networks of suppliers, integrators, contract manufacturers
, logistics service providers, distributors, and service support operators in geographically dispersed locations. Also addressed is the
globally spread customer network. Foci on (1) how global and international companies are enabled to overcome geographical,
cultural, and organizational barriers, (2) how these companies leverage the strengths of the network to create values, and (3) how
these companies avail of different ways and means to manage operations in different regions so as to take full advantage of
local strengths and mitigate local limitations.

13027211 MANAGERIAL FINANCE AND ACCOUNTING

Modern finance theory and its applications to investment, corporate finance, and financial engineering. Covered are analyses of
optimal capital structure, cost of capital, capital budgeting, financial market, asset pricing models, and financial statements,
as well as risk management with emphasis on risk-return analysis. Topics highlighted include accounting equations, analysis
of financial statements for profit, relationship between the financial statements, accounting for manufacturing, and basic elements
of costing for management.

13027212 AVIATION INDUSTRY MANAGEMENT

Economics of operating airlines and airports with emphasis on the implications of competitive strategies for the development of hubs
and networks. Topics include finance, marketing, formation and management of alliances, yield / revenue management, and
travel sales and distribution. Strains on airport capacity caused by the growth in air traffic in the Southeast Asian necessitate
forecasting, airport planning, externalities of airports, pricing airport use, investment decisions, and the role of the private sector
in airport development and operation.

13027213 MARKETING MANAGEMENT

Modern marketing management theory and its applications to strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation with focus on logistics.
Covered are marketing environment, business market analyses, responses to competition challenges, and consumer behaviour
in services and building customer relationships through segmentation and retention strategies. Topics highlighted include product
development, product life cycle, brand management, pricing strategy, place and logistics management, and promotion strategy
in logistics management.

13027214 FREIGHT AND INTERNATIONAL TRANSPORT

Dynamics of the express delivery by air freight and maritime shipping businesses with emphasis on underlying drivers of international
trade flows and demand for capacity in different freight transport modes, as well as industry structure, regulatory environment
and market access. Highlighted are the requirements for profitable air cargo and shipping operations, particularly fleet and network
planning, as well as related cost and revenue management.

13027215 MODERN MANAGEMENT

Concept of modern management and its significance for upholding competitive advantage With a view to trends of logistics in the
course of globalization, corresponding vision, mission, goal and objectives, use of SWOT analysis, strategy formulation, strategy
implementation, and strategy control and evaluation. Topics highlighted include four functions of management, namely, planning,
organizing, leading and controlling in logistics organization, supplemented by drawing up a business plan and producing related case studies.

13027216 TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT
Prerequisite: None
Contemporary techniques for continual quality improvement, summarily known as Total Quality Management (TQM), with emphasis
on organizational management committed to adapting to the cultural changes necessary to improve quality. Topics include relevant
management principles, quality organization, just-in-time operations, inventory management, integration of functional areas,
team building, quality costs, and associated interactive facets of Total Quality Management.

13027217 QUALITY ASSURANCE
Prerequisite: None
Principles of quality and productivity management based on essential concepts, methods, and practices of modern quality
assurance management, interfacing statistical techniques with a managerial approach, supplemented by inspection, analysis
of activity-based costing (ABC), and total quality management (TQM).

13027218 INTERNATIONAL LAND TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT
Prerequisite: 13027106
Automotive carriers and railroad services in several perspectives, including the role of government in infrastructure development and
regulation, industry characteristics, operations, rates, and the example of the uniqueness of interstate carriage in North America.
Also covered are intermodalism, appropriate documentation, and the role of intermediaries. .

13027219 MARITIME AND AIR TRANSPORT MANAGEMENT
Prerequisite: 13027106
Vessel and aircraft operations with focus on distinctive characteristics. In regard of maritime transport management, emphasis
is placed on charter party and linear structures, operations, and framework for continued economic development under conference systems.
Aspects covered include tramp shipping, liner service companies, terminal management, containerization, freight-rates, as well as industrial
and special carriers. In regard of air transport management, current planning strategies, future challenges, and technologies devised for
airport development are reviewed. Topics cover technological advances in both air-side and land-side airport operations and management.
Also addressed are appropriate documentation in maritime and air transport management and the function of intermediaries.

13027220 TRADE FACILITATION
Prerequisite: None
Background of the inclusion of the subject of trade facilitation and the mandate for negotiations, description of the trade facilitation work
undertaken by selected international and regional organisations, legal forms, codification and the modalities for the negotiations, trade
policy issues such as publication obligations and the level of fees connected with importation and exportation, techniques and methods
as well as used by customs in the clearance of goods, Risk management.

Students are required to conduct research under the supervision of advisors. The research work should be of original,
exploratory nature, geared to produce results that are useful in logistics and supply chain management. This type of research is
conducted in two consecutive steps.

RESEARCH STUDY I
Prerequisite: None
Students are required to focus on a particular problem in the domain of logistics and supply chain management and
work out a feasible solution, in close co-operation with a faculty advisor. This type of research is conducted in two consecutive steps.
